Exploring Classical Music: Classical and Romantic Music (AC110113)

This course charts the history of the period which saw the creation of some of the most enduringly popular classical music. We will look at some of the dramatic changes in musical thinking which took place during the late 18th and 19th centuries, including the evolution of forms such as the symphony and the renewed development of vocal music. The course will include many musical examples (audio and video) drawn from the works of the most significant composers of the period such as Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Rossini and Tchaikovsky. No specialist musical knowledge is required.

This is one of three courses (Early and Baroque, Classical and Romantic and Modern and Contemporary Music) covering the history of classical music across three terms. Each course is self-contained and courses may be taken individually or consecutively in any order.
