About this Archive
Administrative/biographical history
Angela Christofilou, from Lancashire, England, and Athens, Greece, and based in London, is a self-taught photographer, actor, voice-over artist, and singer. Over nearly a decade, Angela has committed herself to creating a large body of work in protest photography, being part of and supporting the communities and spaces she documents. Her work explores themes of resistance, human rights, climate justice, community, gender-based violence, family, gender identity, ageism, and sexuality.
Since 2015, Angela has documented numerous social movements, including women's rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, anti-racism, workers' rights, environmental justice, migrant justice, and animal rights. Angela's photography has been featured in exhibitions, books, magazines, newspapers, documentaries, and talks, emphasizing visual art's role in social change. Notable exhibitions include 'Photographing Protest: Resistance through a Feminist Lens' at Four Corners Gallery and 'Out and About! Archiving LGBTQ+ History' at the Barbican Centre.
In 2023, Angela received the 'Portrait of Britain' award from the British Journal of Photography. Her recent book, "Church Bingo," published by Pendle Press, celebrates Heywood's elderly community spirit and fading cultural traditions in post-pandemic, post-Brexit Britain. Through her images, Angela aims to inspire collective action and solidarity, amplifying the voices of marginalized communities and preserving historical moments.
