Edge of the City: Robert Moye and Peter Young Archive
About this Archive
Administrative/biographical history
Moye and Young set out to take a ‘visual stock’ of districts in and around the edge of London’s Square Mile, focusing on ‘lesser known streets and vistas’. According to their website (edgeofthecity.org) the pair found inspiration in the late-Victorian Society for Photographing the Relics of Old London as much as in Eugene Atget, Thomas Struth and Garbriele Basilico. The photographs were created using a 5x4 view camera, and processing took place in a traditional darkroom. Moye and Young believe the resulting effect was ‘quiet and still, suggesting overlapping activity, giving visual coherence and organisation to the layers of history and the jumble of buildings, streets and spaces that make up London’s changing cityscape’.
