About this Archive

Administrative/biographical history

Tony studied painting at the Royal College of Art. After getting his degree he earned his living as a portrait painter, but soon decided he didn’t want to continue doing one-off original paintings that only the affluent could afford. Instead he worked as a graphic designer, illustrator and political cartoonist. In the early 1960s he moved from Ealing, where he had been brought up, to Hackney, where he spent the rest of his life. He loved the East End, and for a time during the 1960s used to spend his days-off from Fleet Street roaming around taking photographs (often making his way from pub to pub).
