Administrative/biographical history

Clifford Harper (b 1949) is an illustrator and anarchist. As a teenager he was drawn to the ideals of anarchism and a growing involvement in the ferment of the 1960s led him in 1968 to ‘turn on, tune in and drop out[1]’. In his early years Harper lived in a commune in Cumberland, and later established a commune on Eel Pie Island in Twickenham. The 1970s saw Harper become further involved with anarchist activities by becoming an illustrator for many anarchist, radical, and mainstream publications and organisations. In 2002 he was the winner of the Trade Union Press and PR Award for Best Illustration. In 2003 an exhibition titled ‘Graphic Anarchy’ was curated which displayed Harper’s artwork.
