Administrative/biographical history

The Values Education Council (VEC) was formally established and registered as a charity in October 1995. Initially conceived at a meeting of the National Foundation for Educational Research in December 1992, a two year consultation period had followed before an interim committee was established to push through the creation of VEC.

The purpose of the Council was to ‘promote and develop values education and values in education to help individuals develop as responsible and caring persons and live as participating members of a pluralist society’. Membership was open to organisations whose primary aims and purposes were consistent with those of the Council. Associate membership, without voting rights, was open to other organisations and individuals who had an interest in educational values.

VEC held an annual conference as well as informal meetings and members' days. They also produced a bi-annual newsletter from 1996-2003. Several projects were undertaken, including ‘Collective Worship’, ‘Moral Status of Morality’ and ‘Being a Citizen in Multi-ethnic Britain’.

Following a decline in the work of VEC, a motion to dissolve the charity was tabled in 2005, but it was defeated. The organisation then continued under new leadership until April 2008 when a motion was again tabled to dissolve the charity. This time it was passed successfully.
