Gallery: Coronations and Jubilees
News Story

This year, Queen Elizabeth II celebrates her Platinum Jubilee. To mark this occasion, our Interpretation Manager, Dr Michelle Johansen, delved into our Special Collections to look back at how similar events have been celebrated in London.
Whether they inspire local street parties, citywide processions, or bored indifference, these occasions have always made an impact on the capital.
Whatever your view on these occasions, it's hard not to be struck by their scale, depicted in the atmospheric images below. These images from the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society (LAMAS) glass slide collection show how Londoners have celebrated royal milestones in the past. They depict fascinating scenes of what took place, showing the regalia, pageantry, and commotion.
