
Walking Tour – The History of Spitalfields
The communities that have settled have left their traces, and the walk will uncover these, revealing the development of Spitalfields and its surroundings from its first beginnings to the present. Drawing on a number of chroniclers of London, the walk will be a journey through some of the streets, architecture and history of this ever-changing part of London.

Anyone with an interest in London’s history.
Will I need any equipment or materials for this tour?
None, but comfortable walking shoes are advisable, together with clothing appropriate for the weather.

We regret that, due to the nature of the route, this tour is not accessible to anyone who uses a wheelchair or who is unable to use steps or stairs.
This route will begin at the front entrance of Bishopsgate Institute.

Steve Smith
Steve Smith is a lecturer and artist. Steve’s research looks at architecture, place and memory, with particular interest in psychogeography and the topography of London. Steve leads walks on London’s modern architecture and public art, has also has experience of teaching art, visual culture theory and architecture at several universities in the UK.
